I am also planning on doing some adventure racing this year and my first race is WAR: Glendalough at the end of April. <<With only a few weeks to go until the 53Degrees North WAR: Glendalough are having a free training run on the Spink Run, which is the first stage of 73km WAR and 39km WAR: Sport. Brian Keogh who’s back from racing the GOD Zone adventure race in New Zealand will lead the pace settlers, while I (Brian Crinion) as the WAR course director will take up the rear to answer any question you might have about gear, training or the course itself. Who: anybody looking to do WAR, all fitness levels will be catered for from 40 minute racers to 2 hours walkers. Date: Sunday 13th of April Time: 10:30am Location: meet in the Upper Lake car park. To save on parking costs, you can park for free at the Glendalough Hotel and jog the 1km to the upper lake car park. Distance: 9km Spink run, with option to extend it to 13km with a run down the final WAR stage (the trail to Laragh GAA) and back to the Glendalough Hotel. >> www.irishtriathlon.com/index.php/2014/04/glendalough-training-run-free/Hope to see some you of on Sunday. I am also planning on doing a spin on Sun after the run (thought about doing it before but unlikely that is going to happen!) if anyone is interested. Kathleen

Cool, WAR races are good (and closeby). I'm doing Blackstairs in Wexford on 5-May - it's a great local race, I'd encourage anyone to think about doing it over the bank holiday weekend :-)

Anyone interested in doing Dingle Adventure Race on 7-June? Individual or relay. I'm going with a few mates and looking for more people for teams and accommodation (holiday homes). All abilities welcome - it's my favourite race of the year so let me know if you're interested.

I'd highly recommend this Adventure Race in Wexford on 3rd May. It's a super course, excellent value and really friendly. I'm going back for my 4th year - anybody up for it? Early bird registration finishes 1-March. It would be great to get a crew heading down - even for a relay. blackstairsadventurerace.com/

After peppering poor Dave with a lot of questions about the Killarney adventure race during the Belpark xmas dinner (apologies for being so annoying, btw), and spending this past Christmas in Killarney I registered for the October race. I’ll be doing the 27km Sport, which seemed to be the entry-level option.
If there is anyone else who is interested in giving adventure racing a try, please register too because it would be great to have other newbies along for the race!
That being said, Clare kindly gave me a few suggestions for training this spring/summer, which I will follow up on. Dave & others, if you have any suggestions for trail runs or events near Dublin that would be most appreciated. I’ve done some train running in the past, but ‘mountain running’ – not so much.

The Irish mountain running associations leinster league would be ideal for that.

Dingle Adventure Race is my favourite race weekend of the year, so I'd really recommend it. They have distance levels for all abilities (mini/sport/full). Best price is €65 if you sign up before 31-Dec. Race is Sat 10-June. I just signed up - 6th year going I think. dingleadventurerace.com/

I'll probably end up only doing Quest Glendalough. Contemplated doing GF Dublin but after a recce decided against it, technical and tricky enough course and it could be cold, wet and dangerous up there in February - too early in the season to risk it

I've signed up for the Clare Island Adventure Race (www.clareislandadventures.ie/adventure-activities/adventure-race-2017) Very short but doing it as part of a weekend away. Also might do Race to Glory again (www.race2glory.com/) - it was brilliant a few years back. Would recommend Achill also.

Hi, I was contemplating entering Dingle Adventure race in June. I'm new to tri/adventure racing so this would be my first race. Could anyone recommend a training split for the next 8/9 weeks please? I will probably aim to enter into the 18km race just to see how I get on. Thanks, David

I will probably aim to enter into the 18km race just to see how I get on. Thanks, David Hi David, Remind me, is the 18km distance the shortest option? If so, I did it last year and you'd be fine following a triathlon training program. The run was flat and along the beach and the cycle was easy enough. The hardest part for me was running in the sand. If you've never kayaked before, that is probably what you'll need to work on. Or just be sure to share the boat with someone who looks like they know what they're doing Let us know if you do sign-up. I think there are a couple of members already registered and if there are more it may be worthwhile adding the race to the Race Register. Thanks!
