Hi All,
Apologies for not being able to get out a race document ahead of the National Champs this weekend. I wanted to just summarise some key points to consider in the last couple of days before race day.
- The race is this Sunday.
- You can register in Base2Race today, Friday (4pm – 8pm) tomorrow, Saturday (11am – 5pm - particularly handy if you are doing the bike leader course there tomorrow – contact Nial for more info). Registering before Sunday will go a long way to reduce race day rushing and stressing if you can fit it in. If not you can register on Sunday in the Brass Fox pub near the harbour in Wicklow from 10am to 11:45
. DONT FORGET YOUR TI CARD
- Transition Opens at 10:45
- Transition Closes at 12:30
- Race Starts at 1pm
The race is not only National Series but also the National Standard Distance Championships. This means that as well as the usual National Series points available, the top 3 in each age group will be awarded medals at the TI Prize Ceremony at the end of the year. The overall winners will be crowned the National Champions. It is sure to be a stacked field.
The Race…
The Swim
The swim is a rolling start. There will be no waves. This is not used very often in Irish races but common in larger international Ironman races. It is a simple process that should benefit everyone. It works by placing a timing mat at the waters edge and allowing people to cross it in their own time (much like a big running race). When you cross the mat your race has started as opposed to starting at the gun.
There are a couple of ways to take advantage od this. You can arrange yourself so that you will be starting in some space with the people you swim with regularly and benefit from organised drafting. If you are nervous or don’t like the hustle and bustle of the first few hundred metres of a swim you can hang back and start in your own time without compromising your swim time or distance.
The swim route is a bit more technical than a normal swim. Please look at the official race briefing and be very familiar with the route.
The Bike
The bike is straightforward, 1 lap out and back. 20km each way mainly along the old N11 road. It is an undulating course (400m total elevation approx.). Some of the downhill sections will be fast but nothing overly technical. Have a look at the profile and familiarize yourself with the location of the uphill sections to help you gauge your effort.
The Run
The run is mainly flat. There is a slight gentle incline for the first 2km to the first turnaround. This followed by two short laps around Wicklow harbour (which I believe might include a set of stairs!)
The Hosepipe Ban
In case you had forgotten Ireland is usually quite cold and often damp. At them moment we are experiencing an unprecedented spell if really good weather which is set to continue over the weekend. Please bear this in mind when planning your race fuel. Consider taking extra water, salt tabs etc. what-ever you are used to training with.
The Briefing
As always please review the official briefing in detail and check the Wicklow Tri Club website for updates.
Lastly best of luck to everyone. Rest up, the training is done and see you on Sunday.
