Ok have a rather stupid but serious question,I have been cycling with Look type clipless pedals for years and always thought I can properly unclip, turns out I do it wrong and think this is partly a problem for me if I need to unclip in a hurry or on a steep hill, basicially what I'm doing is twist my foot inwards and not outwards. Problem is I can't get out of the pedal when I try to twist outwards,I'm using the red cleats ( 9% float ) and some no name pedals,so question is my unclipping problem more related to the pedals or the cleats,I know people with the same cleats who say they don't have that problem
Thanks Britta

I tend to think it's more my pedals, but if it's pedals than this leaves me with the question for which one to go,I don't like the idea of using super tight in the pedals, only learning now this 8nm,12nm etc. stuff, just wondering if the ones with the lowest release tension could cause something similar

Initially i had a lot of problems releasing. So i eased the tightness. This made it super easy to unclip. But i think i have good pedals.

Hi Britta your supposed to twist foot/heel outwards it can be dangerous to twist inwards brigs your ankle close to the back wheel or chain depending on which foot unclip with. If the pedal is to tight and there is no way off easing the tension try using a pencil on your cleat/pedal at the contact points under the lip on the front and both sides the graphite in the pencil will act as a dry lube.

Hi Britta, I always suspected I was doing it wrong and this has been confirmed!
I have always twisted my foot towards the bike, no idea why, just habit.
It's never caused me any issues.

Still working on this, have the suspicion that I might be able to clip out faster outwards when I'm on a really steep hill and super slow ( kind of needed for my next cycling adventure ) ,tested now different settings on my pedals, that didn't help, next step different cleats, after that no real idea

Hi Britta what colour is the blade in your pedals if it's red/yellow that's your problem they are pretty stiff at 20n/12n you can change them to grey which is 8n and a lot easier to get out of very easy to swap out no moving parts just pull out with a pliers and insert new ones also use grey cleats have what is known as float which allows the foot to move in the pedal 4.5 deg, red cleats have 9 deg of movement which could be to much for your foot because it requires more range of movement to get out of the pedal (don't get the black ones no movement, foot locked in and may cause knee problems if you do not have a perfect pedaling style)
