With registration for DCT opening in one week, I wanted to get some feedback from folks who have done the race before. I'm considering registering for the Oly distance but I wanted to know a few things first: 1) What is the water quality like for the swim? Is it generally good or should I worry about getting sick if I swallow too much water? 2) Wetsuit: mandatory - or is water warm enough in August to swim without one? 3) Will it sell out quickly once registration opens? 4) Generally speaking, what are your thoughts on the course and the event itself. Good event to do? Anything else, please add. Many thanks

Hi Naomi, DCT will always have a special place in my heart since it was my first ever tri, so I might be a bit biased in my view: Water, never had any problems, for me the Water quality is fine for a River, it is a Wetsuit Mandatory Race. Bike and Run is in the Phoenix park so closed roads ( big plus for me) , Trail run which is tough but again I like the difference. Selling out defiantly not selling out as fast as other races, saying that , think the Olympic Race is usually sold out around July, lastl Goodie Bag is usual pretty cool

Given that Dublin 70.3 is only 2 weeks previous and is essentially a very similar run course, I think it will suck a certain percentage of DCT entrants. I'd still expect it to sell out.
It's a great course I think. I love that the bike course is so technical and also a bit hilly. Really gives people without TT bikes a big advantage. Also, I didn't do the race last year, but the numbered tattoos they were giving out are really tempting me to enter. You get to feel like a pro for a day!

I have not done Olympic DCT yet but did Supersprint twice. Definite recommend it. Water quality was fine. Goodie bag great. Course not too challenging.

Just be aware Naomi you can't transfer your entry if for some reason you can't race. I believe you can get a refund up to a certain date but maybe double check that with the organisers.

It's Ireland.... Its never warm enough for non wetsuit swims... For real?! I can't tell if you're pulling my leg or not ... Naomi, water is warm enough in August to not wear a wetsuit. Anything over about 14 degrees is cold, but doable without a wetsuit.
However, wetsuits are compulsory for all OW swims in a TI sanctioned race due to the water temperature. In any case, with the (slight) risk of Weil's disease in DCT you want to make sure that as little of your body as possible is exposed to that river water.

Definitely worth asking about DCT because now I know. Now I know about the wetsuits and now I know about Weil's disease - had to look that one up online.
"Weil’s disease is a severe form of a bacterial infection known as leptospirosis. Leptospirosis is caused by bacteria from the genus Leptospira. The infection typically only causes mild flu-like symptoms, including headaches and chills. In severe cases, such as in Weil’s disease, it can lead to organ failure and bleeding." I escaped mosquitoes and West Nile virus for this!?!
Food for thought and will give me lots to consider before registering. Thanks, all. Appreciate your feedback.

Water quality can be hit and miss Naomi,. I was ill a day or so after it one year but one of my favourite races and it didn't stop me doing it the next year. Great atmosphere in the park on the cycle and run laps.

Goody bag is best in any race in Ireland. Water quality is generally good as they flush the river before hand from upstream. Bike course is good as Keith has said as its technical enough to level the playing field in terms or tri or no tri bike Run course is off road and had muddy sections the last couple of years this is not a pb route at all, very lumpy Very well run event and great support in the park.

Water quality really depends on weather! No rain, no diffuse pollution from runoff from argriculture and no spills to river from wastewater. On then other hand if there is rain then... I swam it in 2013 and had no problems.
