Hi all - since January, the Sunday spins have been great with 15-20 people out many weekends. Everybody is getting to know each other and find their own level, which is great since we've 3 groups. One major aspect for those newer to group riding, but who may be confident solo cyclists, is that the dynamics change in a group. Awareness of who's in front, who's beside you and who's behind you become more important. You need to be more aware of the overall group pace, as well as your individual pace (e.g. you might find it slow, but the group might be struggling or happy with the pace). Communication, hand signals, talking, waiting after hill climbs, learning how to change at the front, etc are all key skills. Check out youtube for some good videos - here's the best I could find:

The changeover direction they use is clockwise. We normally go anticlockwise, don't we? Or have I been doing it wrong!

Correct Sharon, we change-up from the right hand side. The rider front right should move ahead gradually, pull into the left lane and the next rider behind that person should move up parallel to them so they now both ride at the front. I couldn't find a video showing that, or even a web image. More info on our Cycling page: www.belparktri.ie/cycling/

To all the new members (especially the great group we had out yesterday around Blessington Lakes) - check out the video in this original post from 2017 about tips of riding in a group. Everyone improved a lot yesterday on how to cycle two abreast, call out obstacles or directions, rotate cyclists at the front and stay nice and tight as a group on the road. It was great to see several people do their first 75km! The sun definitely helped :-)
