I am hopefully not the only person who is struggling to understand what the right technique for cycling is depending on your level of fitness/strengths and how to get the most out of your training. This includes the use of gears and turbo settings. There are plenty of experienced cyclists in the club that I am more than happy to give my euros too for good tips and I am sure there are more like me in the same boat. I am happy to organise something if there is interest.

I have learned quite a bit in the last Year with the Turbo sessions with Eamonn, he keeps on hammering into me "cadence" in combination with Hearts rate, it seems to work but would love to find a short cut, so yes if any of the senior guys would be interested in a evening where they could explain their tips and tricks that would be nice

Eilis, I would be hopeful we might be able to get you some advice without parting with your euros!! As a first step, I think you are signed up to both the Thurs turbo sessions & weekend Tanya Slater camp? It would be well worth while having a chat with both Liam & Tanya before/after session with any questions you might have around technique. They are both very experienced cyclist and am sure will be happy to share their knowledge. We can also ask Liam to start incorporating technique info during the sessions. The club can also look at organizing a bike specific training session/q & a session also if others would be interested.
With regard to long spins, it is definitely worth investing in cadence & hr monitor - and then try keeping cadence spinning at between 80-90 rpm. This will help you figure out which gears to use when in the group. And yes it is okay to use the small ring going up hills!!!!

Just my two cents on this (I'm no pro tho) I started cycling on road bike only about 1.5 years ago and these are things I've learned so far (after several bonks on 100+ cycles) Nothing wrong with using the lowest gear you have HR monitor and cadence sensor are great investment as you are keeping in your "zones" (based on your age and heart rate you can easily set them). Good breakfast, good spin (porridge with banana is my go to) Strength training helped me tons as keeping right posture requires less energy, your legs/arms are positioned correctly and you're using your strength efficiently Practice makes perfect, the more you get out there, the easier it gets!

Thanks all. Not signed up for the camp Ellen but I see it's on the list. I'll ask Frank to take some notes!! I will corner Liam on Thursday as well. Helen H was drilling into me about the use of gadgets so I am accepting that I may need something beeping at me and With some counselling I have learned to accept that the small ring is there to be used!!

I think some of our handy club mates could just temporarily remove your big ring. Sometimes cold turkey is the best detox solution....
