For the year that's in it and given the large number of members signed up to Dublin 70.3 Belpark are hosting a Long Distance / Ironman discussion panel on Monday 9th March at 6.30pm in Terenure Memorial Hall.
This will consist of a panel of long distance experts including Kevin Thornton, Aileen Flynn, David Kildea and Eddie O’ Mahony. The event will be hosted by Declan Bagnall (of Belpark table quiz fame) who will pose questions to the experts, keep the discussion going and ensure that all topics are covered. Declan also has some long distance experience so will also offer his expertise.
So, we are inviting questions from all members who are interested in attending the event. Please post below any questions/concerns/topics below that you would like to see covered during the discussion. I will collate everything and ensure that questions are grouped together so that everybodys queries are addressed.
Anything specific can also be emailed to belparksocial@gmail.com.
This is a great opportunity to soak up all the expert advice from the people who’ve been there at long distance level so hope to see a big crowd in attendance!

Transiton Zone process: Do all IMs have a water dip for washing off sand from your feet? Do you always change in a tent before you get to bike? Is there always assistants, helping to change, put on sunscreen etc.?
Setting up bike the night before - advice
Aid stations - what are they like, organised chaos?
Run - elastic laces or go with proper laces?
Prep in the 2/3 days on location before race.
Post race meal - any good or waste of money?

Transition zone:- macchiato or flat white? Training - merits of whey protein to aid recovery after heavy sessions. Bike - most cost effective aero/time gains. Also interested opinion on clothing. Tri suit or 2 piece plus separate shorts for run. I'm not renting a car, should I pay 50bucks to go on the official course recci or just try hook up with someone over there and split fuel. How do the offcial ones work? Car bus???

Wheels. I ride tubular in a race. How likely is a blow out on tubulars and if it happens is it curtains? Is there a preventative for this before racing? Any additional recommendations re wheels?

I have too many questions, Some for the moment while I think of others....
What motivates you? What are your short term (2015) and longer term goals in triathlon? What are you biggest strenghths/weaknesses in triathlon? How do you address them? What injury prevention/ s&c work do you do? For Kevin T: What are the biggest changes to your training regime since going pro - more volume/ more time for recovery etc? You are made CEO of Triathlon Ireland - what type of changes would you introduce? Anything specific for middle/long distance focused athletes in Ireland. Who is your sporting hero, and why? For David K: What were the main challenges/differences between preparing and racing for Ironman Bolton V Kona?

Do you use a training diary? How do you stick to it and what information do you include? Do you log just workouts, or include foods, calorie counting etc. Do you have an x week plan in advance of a target race, and if so how do you juggle work/other commitments/club training sessions/favourite races in this plan period when they clash with plan structure. Do you have a prep race in advance of target race and if so how far out, and what kind of distance? What is the narrowest time gap between ironman /half ironman races you would consider sufficient.

Tips for balancing training through tiredness vs taking an unscheduled rest day? How to recognise signs of burnout Online coaching (or live coaching)...pretty expensive - worthwhile for the average Joe (or Josephine)? Any essentials recommended for injury prevention (especially when sessions get properly long)
Thanks!

Just wanted to say thanks to Katherine for organising last night and Declan & panel for their time. Got loads of food for thought (boiled potatoes on the bike just one). Still in awe of Kevins down week - 31hrs on the bike! I thought David in particular shared some good insights - thanks again.
