Hi all
Has anyone got any advice re approach to winter training? Taking a few weeks rest now before getting backing into training mode.
I know strength training is pretty important and working on any weaknesses but struggling to find any advice on intensity levels when training or duration of sessions etc. I assume you aim to peak coming into race season or towards your 'A' races?
My training sessions have been pretty much the same intensity (except for taper weeks) the past 10 months but not sure if this is the right approach.

I am doing at least 2 lifting session a week. Keeping it simple, compound lifts are great and will work your whole body. You should pay some extra attention to core work. Yoga/Pilatea are generally recommended for runner /athletes too.

My tips: 1. Reduce intensity - training is like a pyramid, so starting for a new year/season is at the bottom. Build a solid base. 2. Focus on technique - don't go for long/hard sessions always, but maybe do shorter/easier sessions that focus on improving technique. I don't just mean swimming - also lots on running (I can help) as well as bike handling, cornering, maintenance. 3. Switch off - stop training or do a new sport for a few months. Your body and mind need a break (even though you may think you can train solidly 12 months without stopping or recovering) 4. Try some winter sports - cross-country running, cyclo-cross, mountain biking, water polo, etc. I must write a blog on this.

Really helpful article available online regarding importance of end of season break by Tri Coach Lynn Algar - Lynn has been our coach at the Belpark Easter Camp for last three years. Hope Limerick Tri have no objection to us posting this limericktriathlon.com/?p=3670
