What are you looking for the maps to do? Following a pre programmed route, or navigate/locate yourself mid cycle?
The official maps are pretty ok, I've them on my 810. For following a pre programmed route it's grand, for trying to locate myself and use maps to get from an unknown location to somewhere I know... Well it's OK, but I find small screen annoying and generally would pull out phone and use gmaps. Can be done though.
Some small glitches on the maps (or maybe I need to update them) like it tried to bring me down a motorway in Mallorca, and a road once ended in a field but it was telling me to go through the hedge to rejoin the road... Majority of time it's OK though.
I haven't tried any of the free alternative maps (openstreetmaps etc) but heard they can be good.

Thanks Rob, I might be able to get my hands on a 800 and since I never ever have any idea where I'm I thought might be a good chance to pre program a route and follow it, without pulling out my mobile in the middle of nowhere, but for that the card material needs to be pretty good

If you want to just pre program and start it's grand. It'll be as good as your mapping skills & gpx file
Like I said I have gotten lost and used the maps to work out where I am and continue on my way. It'll do that fine. But to get the full functionality (I think) you need to stop workout and go into the laps, then restart etc. If you want to zoom in out on map mid cycle/workout you can. I'll bring it along on sat and you can take a look if you want.
