Cool! love the idea Naoimi!! -- think we need sports that don't require snow for the Irish version though Skating and Cross Country ski-ing I get -- they are technical, fast and meant to be a super aerobic and anaerobic workout but quite surprised by snow shoeing....have never done it -- is it really possible to race in snow shoes? Actually am heading to Canada ski-ing/boarding for a couple of weeks and am concerned about losing fitness while I am away. I am definitely all about going fast downhill and have never before considered the idea of doing cross-country but understand that it is one of the best ways to improve fitness. ...but curious how long it takes to get up to speed, given that I have never tried it before, to workout at an intense level? Any idea???

Any idea??? Haha, quite right that the sport of 'winter' triathlon would need to be adapted for an Irish version. Let me just say how envious I am that you are going on a ski holiday - hope you have a great time! If you can rent a pair of 'running' snowshoes (not the traditional kind that are big and clunky, but light ones) you can get a very good workout with them, especially if used in fresh snow. Running with snowshoes has become increasingly popular the last few years, and there's even a race series that started-up just outside of Ottawa, Ontario (my homebase). You'll see that your HR will shoot right up, but it's so much fun! As for cross-country skiing most triathletes back home use it as winter cross-training because it's a great cardio workout. There are two options either the skate-ski style (need decent technique) or the classic style (much easier). If you're going to a ski resort, you should be able to rent cross-country skis for both styles. Either will give you a good workout as long as you have good coordination between your arms and legs :-) If you're a downhill skier/boarder you should be okay. When it comes to difficulty though, cross-country skiing is probably harder than just running in snowshoes. If you're worried about fitness do remember that you will be giving your legs a good workout while skiing, and your arms too from getting in/out of the hot tub. No ski-holiday is complete without a hot tub! Enjoy your holiday :-)

WOW!! that is super cool Naoimi , thanks for sharing -- had no idea "running" snow shoes existed! Sounds deadly!! Endless possibilities for early morning runs and late evening racing and drinking games Sounds like the cross-country could be worth trying also. Am guessing there are no possibilities for biking in the snow? -- just thinking commuting around the resort...any magic traction devices? Agreed re hot tub. Absolutely essential!!!! Thanks!!

Speaking of winter triathlons, I had been feeling really homesick the last couple of weeks with so many friends posting pictures of themselves snowboarding, cross country skiing, skating along the canal, etc ... until I saw footage of this year's Winterlude Triathlon ... holy effing hell it looked cold this year! All of a sudden I was really happy to be in (relatively) warm Ireland.
I still kinda miss skating along the canal though. Nothing beats it on a nice sunny day and the beaver tails* are the best part.
*Pastry - not actually a beaver's tail
