Hi Gav,
for Wetsuits : Base2Race, Irishfit or apparently even cyclesuperstore, advantage is that you can try on in these Shops different Types of Wetstuits. the other shops don't have a pool but I think their prices are more reasonable. What I have found with different Wetsuit Vendors is that a Large in Orca and a Large in for example Rocket science are tow very different things.
In regards to open Water swims, quite a few people usually post up when they plan to go for a swim, I normally would have been in the Water probably for a while now, for me it is just at he moment the problem of the really cold air. I really hope to get into the Water ( Seapoint ) on Saturday /Sunday morning ,high Tide is around 12 PM , will post it up on the Forum if I go out, just to make everyone aware those will not be official CLub swims, we will start those a bit later in the Season

What are the recommended brands and price points for average quality wetsuits?

Just checking out home page boyneswim.ie/. "Swimmers are encouraged to wear a wetsuit but those who are brave enough to wear togs are very welcome! " The picture from last year has the majority in wetsuits. I'm not an expert. Mine is Sailfish. I tried on multiple brands and it was just the best fit for me.

Gav, drop out to cycle superstore they have a fair few of last year's models on sale. Hana picked one up there last week. Pretty reasonable prices (you can quote me on that to sinead)
Orca is a good brand, and pick up some body glide too to help prevent rubbing

Cycle Superstore are reasonable priced at times, but check the wetsuit carefully before buying. Went out to them last year and they tried to sell me an Orca with nicks all over it at full price, saying that they'd never sell any wetsuits if they didn't sell ones that had nicks in them! They also don't know their arse from their elbow when it comes to wetsuit fit.
Base2Race are more expensive, but offer a much better service. I couldn't afford the extra 100 Euro (300 for their cheapest suit), but if you have it they are well worth the extra money! They take the time to fit you for the suits and even give you a go in the endless pool.
I tried SwimCycleRun but picked the wrong size and had to send it back. Ended up going with Wiggle as it was cheap and I know my size in an Orca wetsuit.
