Hi - is anybody planning on doing the Leinster OW sea swims this summer? There are over 30 races happening from late May through September. I plan on doing several, hopefully 6 to qualify for Dun Laoghaire Harbour swim on 13-Aug. One of the new benefits of TI membership this year was an optional extra of Swim Ireland membership, which allows you take part in these events. I got my Swim Ireland membership card, so used that number to register with Leinster Open Sea Swim website. The races are handicapped, so you'll never be left behind. And no wetsuit, so you get to enjoy the water properly. www.leinsteropensea.ie/calendar/

Hoping to do a few if I can get used to not having a wetsuit!! Wasn't sure if we could register for any race after that email last week saying it was a 'special membership' or something like that?! But I haven't tried to register for anything yet!

David is correct. What I heard is you can specify your club simply as 'swim ireland'. Wetsuits are allowed though not eligible for any prizes if you swim in one and likely most people won't be wearing one but they're trying to encourage more participation by allowing an introduction to the series in a wetsuit if needed. I'd like to try one or two of these races to see what they're like.

I'm hoping to do some too. Would be good to coordinate and all do the same ones.
I am sure I heard/read that the 'special membership' means that we are not eligible for the Liffey/Harbour swims (you have to join a Swim Ire club for that)....could be wrong.

I can't see anything excluding Swim Ireland club members from DLHS or LS. It just says Leinster swimmers must do 6 qualifying races. When I registered with Leinster Sea Swim website to get my number, I selected Swim Ireland as the club. www.leinsteropensea.ie/major-swims/#harbour-race

Bad news - I emailed Swim Ireland they confirmed we can't enter DLHS or LS as "Special Members", we must join a club. Any suggestions on swim club to join? I know 3D have one for that purpose.

Valerie is in Dublin Swimming Club....I met some of them at an event last year and they seemed good craic (they produced rolls mid swim). Think joining involves some sort of recommendation so maybe talk to Valerie.

Valerie and Mairead are both very active Dublin Swimming Club members.
I joined the club last year but didn't really make use of my membership......
I filled in the application forms they have on their website, went along to try out one of their sessions at Seapoint and then an existing club member nominated me to join the club - easy enough process. Cost was €65 to join (they renew membership on Nov 1st)

I am hoping to do some of them this year with the aim of doing the LS at end of the season, haven't decided on a club yet

Just saw the calendar for the wetsuit legal swims. Is there standard distances for the open water swims or is each event different?
